God before and God behind,
God for us and God for our world,
Maker of heaven and earth, creator of sea and sky,
governor of day and night,
We give you thanks,
For this day that you have made, for this your beloved church, for the ways that you usher us home like the prodigal, with joy and festivities.
Our world is a world that is constantly changing,
And so we pray for each of us in the midst of transitions large and small;
Those that alter our schedules and those that alter our lives…
For those learning new homes and communities, new schools or teachers, new students or new friends, new jobs or life-paths; For those adjusting to new ailments or new treatments, new babies or new grief.
For those weathering the constant changes in the economy, waiting for the other shoe, for those weathering the storms in challenging relationships, for those weathering the roller coaster of treatments and recoveries.
For those whose every day is change – who do not know where they will sleep tonight or where they will find their next meal. For those who bear the heavy burdens of poverty, who struggle to feed their children.
For each of these we pray for peace, for strength to weather the storms of our lives, for knowledge that you are present amidst the changes, guiding, comforting, encouraging, loving.
Holy God we pray for those whose lives feel unchanging. For those who look out of the same window every day, who face a solitude that is unbearable, for those whose struggles seem to never change but instead loom with constancy. Surprise them, O God, with your creation, send them life, a moment of laughter, a new friend or a memory that warms. Give them knowledge that in this too, you are with them.
God in the midst of an ocean of unending change, you are our constant.
Your rhythms reassure, your equilibriums sustain,
your reliabilities curb our anxieties.
As you welcome us in this day remind us that
you are our day and night, our heaven and earth,
our sea and sky and in the end our true home.
We pray with the confidence of the children of God,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, amen.
